We all want that bronze tan that just screams summer. But what about the bad effects of sun tanning? Wrinkles, sun spots, sickness- we don’t want it! Introducing: self tanners. Skeptical? Scared? No need to be! Here’s a guide with all you need to know about applying these magical creams and serums.

Step 1: Exfoliate

One of the secrets to an even tan is to get rid of any dry or flaky skin before application. Applying self tan to dry skin could make the finished result look patchy, which is definitely not the look you’re going for. So giving your skin a good scrub is a must! Experts recommend doing this a day before you plan to use a tanner.

Step 2: Exfoliate your face

If you’re planning on tanning your face, then don’t forget to exfoliate there as well! This is a great chemical exfoliator that will ensure your skin is smooth for application. Apply it after your shower onto clean, dry skin using a cotton pad.

Step 3: Moisturize

The next step to ensure you get an even base for your self tan is to moisturize. This is gonna stop any dryness from creeping back to your skin.

Step 4: Gather the right tools!

When it’s time to tan, make sure you have the right tools. We believe the best way to self tan is with a mitt.

Step 5: Time to TAN!

Pump foam applicator firmly and apply liberally to an Application Mitt before using long, sweeping motions to smooth over legs, arms, and body. Use the remaining residue on the Application Mitt for face, elbows, and knees. Skin may be washed after one hour. For a long-lasting dark tan, leave foam on skin for up to 6 hours. Shower with warm water and gently pat skin dry. For the deepest tan, reapply Tanning Foam 30 minutes after initial application.

PRO TIP: If you’re worried about self tanning your face, you could try mixing a little of your self tanner with your favourite moisturiser to dilute it slightly for a lighter application.

Step 6: Take a Chill!

The next step might be your favorite – do nothing! If you’re using a developing tan, giving yourself enough time to let the formula do its thing is essential. Immediately after tanning, let it dry completely before putting on some loose, dark clothing to prevent your tan transferring.

Either apply your self tan in the morning for daytime development, or apply before you go to bed to wake up looking bronzed and beautiful.

Step 7: Shower

When you’re ready to rinse and reveal your freshly tanned skin, pop back in the shower. Use lukewarm water and try to be as quick as possible. As soon as the water runs clear, hop back out and gently pat dry with a towel.
